Pareidolia

Live performance at Cardiff Made, Hothouse Residency, Closing event, September 2019.

In collaboration with Luis Tapia and Annie Fenton.

Pareidolia was a collaborative live performance exploring themes of connection, disconnection, and the interpretation of ambiguous forms. The term "pareidolia" refers to the human tendency to perceive familiar patterns in random shapes, framing our exploration of the boundaries between fiction and reality and how we interpret connections in our everyday lives.

Using draped sheets to create a staged scene, we mimicked "The Lovers" by Magritte, symbolising our interest in semiotics and metaphor. The performance involved wrapping our heads in a single bed sheet, connecting us physically but rendering us blind. We enacted repetitive, mundane home actions, relying on blind faith and physical connection to navigate the space together.

This performance highlighted the complexities of human relationships, emphasising the paradox of being intimately connected yet isolated. By responding to each other’s movements while blindfolded and physically bound, we embodied the trust and interdependence inherent in human connections. The act of navigating the space blindly invited the audience to reflect on their perceptions of reality and the unseen ties that bind us.
